Marijuana Breathalyzer?

So apparently back in 2002 the government approved funding to develop and test a breathalyzer for marijuana and other drugs such as cocaine.  Since one of the few arguments for anti-legalization is that there is no way to on site test for influence in drivers then I say, what the hell happened to the unit they were testing 8 years ago?  With this new information Im starting to think that the project was abandoned just so there would be grounds to maintain the prohibition against our beloved grass.  Either that or officials do not agree on a legal limit such as we have with alcohol.  Faithful readers and loyalists to the cause, what is your opinion?

  4. you're right mike, breathalyzers have an average of 15% deviation from the actual blood alcohol content however, if there were a reliable breathalyzer to measure thc in the blood within the same or better limitations of an alcohol breathalyzer then government officials would really have no excuse to keep weed illegal.

  5. NameBrands hit it on the nail. Money,Power,Control. Despite the fact that scorpion stated current devices used on alcohol arent entirely accurate but they sure make the cops look like they're doing something putting more paper in their police budgets, and seizures etc. That being said, such a breathelyzer could be put into use so they could use the results (however inaccurate they may be) to legalize everything and sell it themselves like alcohol. Now this I could see.

Except that's a bullshit argument. The law for driving under the influence won't change, which means it's just as difficult to test now. For instance, even if it's illegal in the home, a cop can't charge you with a DUI for THC in your body from a joint you smoked a month ago. They still need to find an accurate test to determine if it affected your driving. Whether it's illegal/legal to smoke at home doesn't change that.

  7. I think it's sad our government actively denies Marijuana users their right to pleasure that Alcohol users enjoy. While I believe driving high is not the safest thing(A guy in Italy just killed 7 amateur bikers while driving under the influence of Marijuana), it shouldn't be used as a point for anti-legalisation. Good read

  10. Australia has random drug testing for amphetamines and cannabis. They stick like an ice cream stick in your mouth and if your saliva makes it change colour they do the blood test. It has changed behaviour just like random breath tests did for alcohol. I don't smoke and drive any more. Now if they can just get junkies on the nod off the road, I'll be a lot happier.
